Philadelphia Flyers Selects Wegmans as Official Grocer

Under a new partnership, Wegmans and the Philadelphia Flyers will create a new program, Food & Fridges, which will provide a new branded refrigerator and snacks to a local school where student athletes can get healthy snacks.

Wegmans Food Markets has become the Philadelphia Flyers’ Official Grocer, signing a multiyear deal that includes several unique activation points across the the professional hockey team's portfolio, including with the Flyers and Flyers Charities.

Under the partnership, Wegmans and the Flyers will create a new program, Food & Fridges, which will provide a new branded refrigerator and snacks to a local school where student athletes can get healthy snacks. The first school to take part in the program is Penn Wood High School, in Lansdowne, Pa.

Wegmans will also become the presenting partner for the Flyers Recess program, which rolled out last season. Flyers Recess is a free school assembly program that aims to help area children stay healthy and active while learning such life skills as teamwork and determination. Kids participate in an interactive, game show-style assembly where they practice hockey skills with Flyers-themed equipment donated by the Flyers organization. Last year, the program reached 6,500 students at 16 schools and will expand this season.

“We are thrilled to partner with a respected and iconic brand like Wegmans,” said Todd Glickman, chief revenue officer at Philadelphia-based Comcast Spectacor, owner of the Flyers. “Their commitment to giving back to the community strongly aligns with our own values, and we are looking forward to partnering with Wegmans on important programs like Food & Fridges that make a real difference for local families.”

“We are proud to be partnering with the Flyers to fight hunger and promote the health and well-being of student athletes,” noted Wegmans Community Relations Manager Linda Lovejoy. “It is partnerships like this one that enable us to address food insecurity in every community we serve.” 

The grocer will also have a presence at the upcoming Gritty 5K, one of Flyers Charities marquee fundraising events. Wegmans will provide all cakes used at the Gritty “Caking” station and supply Wegmans Wholesum bars for all participants.

With its 53,000-plus employees, family-owned Wegmans operates more than 100 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and Massachusetts. The company is No. 37 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America. PG also named Wegmans a Top Regional to watch in 2023 and one of this year’s 10 Most Sustainable Grocers.
